Hand protection

- Bruno Martin, Safety Counsellor

Fingers and hands are the most injured limbs on construction sites.

We use them in all our daily tasks; they are therefore vulnerable to being crushed, cut, punctured, exposed to various chemicals and vibrations. It is therefore important to protect them well, either with the right gloves for the task at hand, safety guards on rotary tools, the use of push buttons instead of fingers, etc.

Two subjects rarely discussed when talking about hand protection :

The back of the hand : This part of the hand never receives all the protection and attention it deserves. It has less natural protection than the palm, which has thicker skin, calluses and more muscles. Regular gloves, by design, offer more protection. The main injuries to the back of the hand are caused most of the time by impact or entrapment. It is very important to choose gloves that provide cushioned back protection, which is intended to distribute the impact force over a larger area.

The dormant hand : It is the hand that you rarely use. For a right-handed person, the left hand is the dormant one and the right, the dominant one. The dormant hand is less coordinated than the other one and always seems in the wrong place at the wrong time because our attention is always focused on the dominant one that usually does the work. When performing a task, occasionally look at your dormant hand to make sure it is not in danger. Here are some places to avoid placing your dormant hand: hot surfaces, line of fire of rotary tools and knives, etc.

Your hands are sophisticated tools with extraordinary strength and dexterity. They can pinch, grab, turn, lift, hold and handle while performing a multitude of other special functions. That is why it is very important to properly protect them to enjoy them 100%.
